Christmas came early at Chauncy
December was a very busy month for students and staff at Chauncy School. We organised another successful Christmas Party for the Age Concern Over 60s Club from Priory Street, we welcomed St. Elizabeth's School for our annual Christmas Party that has been running for as long as anyone can remember. We filled St. Mary's Church in Ware with Year Seven students, their parents and grandparents at our Community Carol Service. We performed a variety of Christmas and contemporary music at our Christmas Concert and the school choir and band visited Hill View Residential Home in Collett Road to sing carols and play festive music. We collected over 180 shoeboxes on behalf of the Rotary Club of Ware to give presents to the most needy across Europe and the Friends of Chauncy School raised several hundred pounds by running a successful stall at Dickensian Evening. Our Year Seven students made a Christmas pop video to challenge the X-Factor finalists and the 6th Form and Year Ten ran a party for 175 Year Seven and Eight Students on the Friday before we broke up. Mrs O'Neil prepared a fantastic Christmas Lunch on two days for students then staff and we finished the term with another outstanding Christmas Revue organised brilliantly by Miss Massod. On Monday 19th December, we opened our doors to 125 Reception to Year Six Students who participated in 'Winter Wonderland', a full day of Christmas activities at Chauncy. Please view the highlights video below and you can see photos and videos of our Christmas Fun on our Chauncy Facebook Page here.

Rotary shoebox scheme

This year the school took part in the Rotary Shoebox Scheme. The scheme, which has been running since 1994, has been helping to bring gifts to poor families in many countries in Eastern Europe, mainly at Christmas and Easter but also throughout the year. Students, particularly in Years 7 and 8, were asked to take home a Rotary Shoebox and fill it with gifts of toys, teenage items or household goods. 180 boxes were filled and returned by the deadline of 30 November and they are now on their way to surprise and delight children who may receive little or nothing else this Christmas. CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY DAY, 15 JULY 2011
Chauncy celebrated its sixth Community Day on Friday 15th July, when over 700 students, 100 staff, several parents and volunteers, participated in a full day of local community projects in Ware and its surrounding villages.
As part of the day, Chauncy School welcomed 400 primary school students who participated in a variety of activities including a mini Olympics, projects in art, cooking, dance, ICT, science, photography and modern languages, a drama workshop and technology activity in which students designed, built and raced their own kit cars. Chauncy students and staff ran these enjoyable sessions, where learning and fun were the main aims of the day.

Our Year Seven students took part in a carousel of community based activities that included working with Hertfordshire Police, St. John’s Ambulance, Road Safety Awareness and clearing and recycling litter on an environmental walk through Ware. Year Seven also helped clean up the school buildings and grounds in readiness for the new academic year.
Older students were transported in a fleet of six minibuses to engage in a range of diverse projects including literacy classes, music workshops, pond dipping, bug hunting, digging vegetable patches and painting garden furniture and murals for the town and village primary schools. Groundwork and decorating projects were carried out at organisations including such as Wareside, High Cross and Thundridge Village Halls, Ware Priory and St. Mary’s Church.
Our Year Nine students spent the day washing cars to raise funds for UNICEF and our Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Scheme. The Chauncy car wash raised £350.00 towards these worthy causes.

In all we ran 65 projects, involved over 1000 young people and over 2000 people in total on the day. There were many highlights, plenty of tired, dirty but happy students at 3.35pm on Friday .
Many thanks to all our partners who contributed projects for us to work on and to John Warner, Presdales, Sele and Wheatcroft Schools for the use of their minibuses on the day.
We are already looking forward to Community Day 2012 and if you have any suggestions as to how we could help you or your organisation please contact me, Steve Walton (Deputy Headteacher) at the school. stephen.walton@chauncy.org.uk

BERLIN: 17-18 MARCH 2011
At the crack of dawn on Thursday 17 March, 43 year 10s and 5 members of staff met bleary-eyed at Stansted airport. We were meeting in preparation for the annual History/German trip to Berlin.
During the two days students saw key sites linked to the Third Reich. At the Topography of Terror students learnt about the horrors of the SS and the Nazi Regime. We also visited Bebelplatz, the scene of the Nazi book burning, where there is now a memorial dedicated to the event.
The second day was largely based around sites linked to the Cold War period when Berlin was split in two. A highlight is a visit to the former Stasi prison where students learn about the methods of psychological terror used again political opponents. The trip ended with a stop at Checkpoint Charlie where numerous students came home with an interesting array of hats!
